Umpiring

2021 Umpire Training (updated 4/9/21)

Where and when?

Respecting health protocols, all of our 2021 umpire training has been done online, unlike prior years when dozens of trainees would meet on-field and in a classroom.  Training consisted of two elements:

FIELD MECHANICS: The league prepared an instructional video designed to provide basic umpire training on positioning, making calls, calling balls and strikes from behind the mound, and proper signals.  This video was shown, narrated, and recorded via Zoom on Tuesday, April 6th.  If you missed it, but would still like to participate click here to watch the recording.

RULES INSTRUCTION: Our league used a series of online clinics prepared by District 4, the final installment of which took place on March 31st.  Attendance at all sessions was required.  To go back and watch the recordings, please click on the links below:

March 17  Session 1 - Discussion of Rulebook #2, new rules for 2021, safety and equipment (click here to watch the recording)
March 24  Session 2 - Rulebook #’s 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 (click here to watch the recording)
March 31  Session 3 - Rulebook #’s 8 and 9, obstruction and interference (click here to watch the recording)

Having the actual Rulebook would be helpful, but the league we will not be purchasing as many copies as we normally would.  To obtain a copy, visit https://www.shoplittleleague.org/league-essentials/rulebooks/?utm_source=march%20store%20a&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=rulebooks%20link

What next?

After you have completed the training, you will likely fall into one of two categories:

-   Volunteering for a specific team (i.e. you are a coach, manager, parent, or older sibling): in this case, you are encouraged to contact your team’s manager and volunteer to help him/her cover umpire duties that will have already been assigned to the manager prior to our training.

-   “Free agent” (i.e. you may be a junior umpire, former league parent, community member at large, or a coach/manager/parent looking to umpire more): in this case, your contact information will be circulated to all major and minor division managers immediately after the training and they will contact you to help cover their umpire duties as needed.

If you have any questions, please contact Jim Quilici, Director of Umpires, at [email protected].  Please be sure to check back here periodically for any updates, especially for the time and date of our Zoom meeting!

P.S. If interested, please also consider the Little League Umpire Registry.  Membership in the Umpire Registry is free, and includes access to several training publications, reduced price bundle of umpire supplies, and participation in several training webinars.  Members will also receive the regular email newsletter.  Feel free to register here: Umpire Registry

Also, Alameda Little League has some local rules that the Board of Directors has chosen to implement. Did you know that a pitcher in AA can pitch only 2 innings while a Majors pitcher can pitch an entire game (provide they stay below the daily maximum pitch count for their age)?  Press this link to read the 2021 Local Rules and Pitching Guidelines.
